Opening Remarks – Colonel Commandant

BGen (ret’d) Bill Brewer, OMM, CD,
Col Cmdt, Corps of RCEME

It is with great pleasure, as your Col Cmdt, to provide a few remarks in the on-line version of our 75th Anniversary RCEME Journal. It is incredible to reflect that 75 years ago, the Corps of RCEME stood up in order to ensure that the Canadian Army had the right organization to deal with the ever increasing complexity of equipment on the battlefield…and the Corps has never looked back since. We can all be justifiably proud of our accomplishments.

I would like to take you back to 1 Jan 1994. I was a member of the Corps Council (RCEME Senate at the time), and can assure you that it was crunch time as the Corps moved towards major celebrations planned across the country during our 50th Anniversary celebrations. This was a huge event for the Corps. A centre piece of that celebration was the raising of an incredible monument at the RCEME School in Borden. The festivities that year were fantastic, unlike any that the Corps had seen before. As we reveled in our proud history and legacy at the time, the thoughts of many of us drifting forward in time to the next milestone, the 75th in 2019, seemed really too far away to comprehend…wasn’t it?

Incredible as it may seem, here we are today, accelerating through our 75th Anniversary year! During the past 75 years, the Corps has evolved over time with professionalism and innovation second to none. Our success is very much steeped in our rich legacy and our incredible esprit de corps. Our 100th Anniversary is now just around the corner! We need to remember that every step we take as we move forward this year towards our centenary in 2044 is important in not only building on our past but also in helping to shape the future of the best Corps in the Canadian Army. Remember, we are “RCEME Corps Proud.” Let’s have a tremendous 75th Anniversary!

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible throughout this year’s 75th celebrations.
